If you like the idea of having a beach to yourself, take the footpath north from Old Grimsby Beach to quiet Gimble Porth. This peaceful spot has all the hallmarks of a Tresco beach: pale sands, clear waters, evocative views, a lush green backdrop… Your dog is welcome to join you at Gimble Porth (just please keep them on a lead).

Gimble Porth is a bay towards the north of Tresco. It's close to several of Scilly's famous defences, including King Charles' Castle and Cromwell's Castle on the opposite west coast, and the Old Blockhouse just south along the coast path.

If you prefer your ruins to serve pizza and beer, head back towards Old Grimsby and the Ruin Beach Cafe, which is partially housed in the remains of an old smugglers' cottage.
