The historic fishing town of St Ives is the main holiday resort of the Lands End Peninsula and is home to the St Ives School of Painting.
In addition to numerous craft shops and galleries are the Barbara Hepworth museum, the Tate Modern Gallery and the Bernard Leach Pottery.
St Ives has always attracted writers and artists. Virginia Woolf spent many childhood holidays here. D.H.Lawrence lived for a time in nearby Zennor and entertained other well-known writers of the day such as Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry.
Throughout the twentieth century, an artists’ colony flourished. Ben Nicholson, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon are just a few of the names of St Ives painters. Alfred Wallis lived here and is one of the best-known exponents of the primitive school.
Porthmeor Beach is popular with surfers and Porthminster Beach is the first of a string of golden beaches stretching along St Ives Bay as far as Godrevy Lighthouse. A mild climate, beautiful beaches and numerous hotels and restaurants make St Ives an ideal venue for family holidays.
