Porthkidney Beach - West Cornwall

Cornwall Beaches > West Cornwall > Porthkidney Beach

Large sandy beach in front of the sand dunes of Lelant. Reasonably sheltered at the western end and usually quiet. At low tide Carbis Bay Beach is accessible by walking around the point.

The river is not suitable for swimming and the currents at this end of the beach can be dangerous.

directions:

Turn off coast road between Hayle and St Ives. Approach from Lelant across the golf course and over the sand dunes.

You can also get to the beach by taking the Carbis Bay turning and then taking the first right. This will bring you to the coast path.

Surfing at Porthkidney Beach

At the western end of Porthkidney is Hawk's Point, or Dork's Point as it is sometimes referred.

When there is a (really) big north coast swell and the wind is anything from due south to west Hawk's could be firing. The only problem is everybody knows it! Hawk's seems to be particularly popular with inexperienced surfers and recently seems to be the preferred spot of many lady surfers!
Hawk's Point also seems to be the embodiment of the 'sheep syndrome'. If you paddle away from the crowd people tend to follow you!

Having said all that, on a good day Hawk's can provide quality waves. Long walling rights with the occassional barrel down the beach and a punchy, wedgey left at higher tides towards the point.
