Marazion Beach - West Cornwall

Cornwall Beaches > West Cornwall > Marazion Beach

Despite being situated in front of the popular village of Marazion and having ample parking and amenities the beach never really gets that busy.

Mostly sand with a few pebbly patches, Marazion beach is an ideal family beach with safe, clean water, lifeguard patrol, the convinience of the nearby town and a good children's playground located on the green behind.
Perhaps the most striking feature is the view over to St Michael's Mount. Situated just offshore the island castle makes quite an impressive backdrop.

Towards the town end the beach becomes rockier after which there are a series of small rocky coves. It is from this end of the beach that you can walk over to St Michael's Mount at low tide along a stone causeway.

Marazion beach is about a mile long, starting in front of the town and curving round to the Station House pub/restaurant. The bay continues for about another 2 miles becoming Longrock beach and then Eastern Green

directions: From Penzance head eastwards on the A30. At the end of the second stretch of dual carriageway turn right at the round-about. This road will bring you out right in front of the beach.

Surfing at Marazion Beach

Marazion is quite sheltered so takes a fair old swell to get going. On top of this the prevailing wind is a South Westerly which is onshore. To get any swell into Marazion usually requires a South Westerly gale so most of the time it's onshore.

Perfect conditions are a huge South swell and Northerly winds which does happen every year or so. I've seen Marazion at a solid 4ft and offshore on occasions. However, it is still a fairly weak, slopey wave due to the shallow sea bed. More of a longboard wave really.

There are a few reefs round here that can get good and hold a 6ft+ swell - you'll have to find those yourself though!

lifeguard service: Lifeguard service during summer months

Dogs: No dogs (Easter to October)

facilities: Marazion town has all the shops and facilities you'll need including toilets by the beach, cafes, restaurants and The Godolphin Arms overlooking the beach in front of the Mount at one end of the beach and the Station House at the other.

Nearest town: Penzance
