Cawsand Bay Beach - South East Cornwall

A calm sheltered bay which looks over Plymouth Sound and is generally considered a safe place for swimming. The beach is made of sand and shingle and also has many rock pools to explore around the edges. Boats can be hired and there is a slipway from the beach. A good place for families.

The twin villages of Cawsand and Kingsand are a pair of 17th Century fishing villages once renown for their smuggling activities. The streets are narrow and twisting with pretty pastel-coloured houses and can be hard to negotiate for people not used to them so cars are best left at the car park at Cawsand.

The two villages are part of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park and are within the Rame Peninsula, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The area is sometimes called the forgotton corner of Cornwall because visitors to the county now use the much improved A30 and no longer pass through it. In the summer season there is a passenger ferry from Plymouth to Cawsand.

Directions: Take the A38 from Plymouth. At Trerulefoot turn left onto the A374. Two miles after Polbathic turn left on the B3247 to Crafthole. At Crafthole turn left and follow the B3247 to Millbrook. Drive through Millbrook staying on the B3247. Shortly after Millbrook turn right and follow the road down to Cawsand Bay
